Christmas Count 2014

Saturday, December 20th, 2014

Today was our local Aubudon Society Christmas Bird Count day. Forty-four species for our group, and thirty-five for me this day. Highlights were a Clay-colored Sparrow, bluebirds, and a hundred forty-eight coots. Rather than throw a bunch of words at you, I’ll simply post some photos.

Yellow-bellied Sapsucker.

Awoke well before sunrise this morning—which was nice, considering the lovely sunrise. Today seemed a little more birdy overall, although the Red-Headed Woodpecker seemed to have split the island. (Someone had done a little road grating right in front of its yard.) Walked through Cathedral Woods to Whitehead today. Saw the mother of all fairy houses. Also saw a seal floating on its back.

Magnolia warbler, Monhegan Island, Maine, 28 September 2013.

Magnolia warbler, Monhegan.

Up early, birded Monhegan until late morning, got my stuff together, took the Elizabeth Ann back inshore. The water was as smooth as new blacktop, the sun bright, a youthful eagle flapping to a perch on a tall spruce on an island.

Got my dog, put stuff away, took a hike up Beech Hill.

(I’ll compile my Monhegan list soon.)
