Calm before the storm

Monday, August 31st, 2015
Red-eyed Vireo, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 31 August 2015.

Red-eyed Vireo.

Partly cloudy, not very windy, not too warm when Jack and I hiked Beech Hill this late-afternoon. Not many birds, either—not apparent ones, I mean. Very few calling. Saw only four, including a young vireo I happened to spot foraging for insects in the tip of a young tree.

The youngsters are adult sized now. Migration is a couple short weeks away. Kind of like the calm before the storm.

Fly hatch

Sunday, August 30th, 2015
Cedar Waxwing, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 30 August 2015.

Cedar Waxwing.

Very busy, fruitful day. Desk work, lawn, vacuum, sofrito, hike with Jack. We had the hill pretty much to ourselves this late-afternoon—and it was great. Even though there were flies all over the place. Especially up toward the tips of the spruces at the summit, where waxwings were picking ’em off like grapes on a vine.

Tonight is cool and still and fragrant and lovely. August is a sweet time of year here.

Errand day

Saturday, August 29th, 2015
Purple Finch (female), Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 29 August 2015.

Purple Finch (female).

Saturday, errand day. I got busy early, took care of chores, and still dog and I managed to hit Beech Hill before noon. A hazy sun, muggy 70s (F). Hardly any obvious birds—but they were around.

Waxwing dream, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 29 August 2015.

Waxwing dream.

Not until we got to the summit was there much activity at all, in fact. Moseyed over into the spruce grove and heard a the chip of Yellow-rumped Warbler, as it left a branch and flew down the eastern trail a bit. I thought I might catch a glimpse, so we headed down to the rocky overlook, and I began psh-ing a little. Right away a female Purple Finch appeared, vocalizing, clearly alarmed. And then, as we stood there, a Red-eyed Vireo appeared, and an Alder Flycatcher. Even a hummingbird zipped by and took a look at what all the fuss was about.

I also got a look at what at first I thought was a monarch butterfly, but it turned out to be a viceroy.

A cool evening, a full moon evening. In fact, as I write this, the moon is 99.999952234443% full according to this website I made a while ago.
