Storm a-Comin’

Wednesday, November 30th, 2022
Tufted Titmouse, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 30 December 2022.
Tufted Titmouse.

Supposed to be cloudy all day, with high wind and rain later, so Jack and I headed up the main trail this day. Quite windy already, didn’t expect many species—and sure enough had only five by the time we’d gotten nearly back to the parking lot. Then things got interesting.

Nuthatch, Brown Creeper, titmice, chickadees all over the place, and a Downy Woodpecker. So sweet.

We’ll see how tonight’s (very) high winds turn out. Hoping not to lose power. We shall see.

Lark

Tuesday, November 29th, 2022
Horned Lark, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 29 November 2022.
Horned Lark.

This morning’s hike was a fun one. Sub-freezing temps, but calm, with a nearly cloudless sky. In the woods, little birds abounded—chickadees, nuthatches, goldfinches, a couple woodpecker species. Quieter at the summit, until I rounded Beech Nut and spied a Horned Lark.

First of the species I’d seen since last I’d seen one at Beech Hill, at least four—and maybe five or six or seven—years ago. Mostly I’ve seen them in flocks, I think, but this was a solitary bird who posed for a minute.

Thanks, lark.

Few Species

Glimpse of Northern Cardinal, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 28 November 2022.
Glimpse of Northern Cardinal.

A cool morning, not cold. Sun at first, then overcast. The bay reflecting a beautiful, dramatic, moody sky. Few birds, though. And only one half-way decent photo of a cardinal.

But that’s all right. Captain Jack and I had our usual fun time absorbing the landscape, the air, the temperature, the sights the smells.

We’ll do it again tomorrow.
