Junco in a Juniper Tree

Tuesday, November 30th, 2021
Dark-eyed Junco, East Millcreek, Salt Lake City, Utah, 30 November 2021.
Dark-eyed Junco.

A quick hike, an earlier hike—most of it in the mountain shade. Quite a few species, but lower numbers. I only managed a photo of one, a junco in a juniper tree.

Pleasantness

Monday, November 29th, 2021
Black-capped Chickadee, East Millcreek, Salt Lake City, Utah, 29 November 2021.
Black-capped Chickadee.

Another fine hike with dog this morning. Cloudless again, chilly in the shade, but pleasant in the sun. Again a birder’s dozen.

A little smog collecting in the basin, but clean breathing up the deer trails.

Most fun was the last bird on my list: a Yellow-rumped Warbler. First I heard its chip, then I spotted it as it left its perch—alas, too far away for a photo.

A Birder’s Dozen

Sunday, November 28th, 2021
Northern Flicker, East Millcreek, Salt Lake City, Utah, 28 November 2021.
Northern Flicker.

A little warmer this morning, and cloudless. We were the first human and dog up the switchback, it seems, although before our return, we’d met up with a few later hikers. Meanwhile, we encountered assorted birds.

Quite a few of them, in fact—including the neighborhood solitaire for the first time in several days. Three finches, a couple sparrows, the usual corvids—twelve species in all.

Know how thirteen is called a “baker’s dozen”? Well, my list today totaled a birder’s dozen. ’Cause we don’t fudge.
