Robins in the fog, Beech Hill, Rockport, Maine, 28 February 2013.

Robins in the fog.

Wet, muddy, thawy. Crows about, and chickadees singing out back. Didn’t rain much, as it was forecast to do, but a misty fog settled over everything in early afternoon. That’s about the time two dogs and I took a drive up to Beech Hill.

Birch.

The trail was a mess and a mire. We slogged up, we slogged down. In between, I heard more chickadees and a titmouse, saw a bunch of robins (maybe three dozen?), and spotted a solitary flicker up at Beech Nut. Slush and mud and puddles and slick spots—but I didn’t fall on my butt once, even being pulled by strong Australian cattle dogs.

Tonight is wet still. The last day in February. Spring must be only about three weeks away.

Life is motion

Storm a-comin', Beech Hill, Rockport, Maine, 27 February 2013.

Storm a-comin'.

Overcast and right about freezing. The wind picked up ahead of what was supposed to be some kind of snow or rainstorm that should last through tomorrow. Jack’s friend Boone is here for a while, but those two napped while I worked—until I took a peek at the weather radar and saw precipitation approaching. So we high-tailed it to Beech Hill.

Those two boys can really pull, but I didn’t fall down. The trail was snowy, slippery. Robins and chickadees and crows. It was a quick trip—no precip yet—up and down.

Tonight, though, the snow began, and it’s still whipping around out there. I wonder if it’l change to rain.

Robins, redtail, and moon

Birch, Beech Hill, Rockport, Maine, 26 February 2013.

Birch.

Another warm, calm day—sunny at first, but overcast after a little while. The snowfall has melted back to where it was before the big blizzard a couple weeks ago. Tackled a time-consuming desk job today, polished it off, set out with Jack to do errands and hike Beech Hill. En route, passing Chickawaukie Lake, I spotted a fine-looking, light-colored redtail on a utility line by the road. I wonder if it’s the same bird I saw on Porter Street a month or two ago. Had similar plumage

The bay.

We met a solitary hiker on the trail. We also encountered robins and a chickadee and nice, moody-looking skies.

Tonight, a just-past-full moon is bathing everything in light. A minute ago, I heard mallards squawking over at the cove.
