Warm and wet, high wind, a number of birds on the hill (including a Sharp-shinned Hawk following a flock of redpolls). But the nearest I got to bird life was in town: turkeys in my front yard and gulls at the grocery store.

Still, spring is shaping up nicely.

Morning Surprises

Saturday, March 30th, 2019
Eastern Phoebe (first of the year), Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 30 March 2019.
Eastern Phoebe (first of the year).

What a fun morning. Spring surprises all over the place.

A surprise bluebird flitting over to a perch a few feet away from me. A surprise Eastern Phoebe popping up out of nowhere (first-of-year bird). A surprise pair of Yellow-rumped Warblers in the spruce grove.

Eastern Bluebird.

Also a big blackbird flock. Juncos all over the place. A flock of redpolls still.

(I was most surprised and impressed by the phoebe.)

Sparrows

Friday, March 29th, 2019

Beech Hill List
Beginning at 8:30 a.m., I hiked the open trail.

Song Sparrow, Rockport, Maine, 29 March 2019.
Song Sparrow.

Drizzly morning, little breeze, sparrows everywhere.

Mostly juncos, but many song sparrows, a white-throat, and a fox. Also several other species—flock of redpolls, fighting male bluebirds, robins galore.

Possible drizzle again tomorrow. Likely more sparrows, too.
