Bluebird surprise

Saturday, November 30th, 2013
Eastern bluebird, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 30 November 2013.

Eastern bluebird.

Awoke early and got in The Zone before 7 a.m. An intensely productive day, interrupted only by a quick, chilly hike up Beech Hill in early afternoon with dog face. Birds right away: chickadees, nuthatches, titmice, crows—and a small flock of bluebirds toward the base of the trail. I just barely missed some great photos, at least two of them. But hikers were about, and the bluebirds fluttered off into the trees.

Still, what a nice surprise.

Ice

Ice, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 29 November 2013.

Ice.

Worked all day this sunny, frigid day. Didn’t get out at all until my hike with dog—which proved colder still than yesterday, and not a little windy. Quite a few other hardy hikers made the trek, sidestepping ice in the trail (result of runoff from the heavy rain of a couple days ago).

Birds were scarce. Saw a few little guys flitting along the roadsides. It’s in the teens (F) out there tonight.

Gratitude

Birch, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 28 November 2013.

Birch.

Thanksgiving Day. I’m grateful for my Beech Hill birch, the most perfect tree I know. I’m also grateful that I still have the stamina to hike the hill, and the fortitude to hike it in such cold and windy conditions as today.
