A year

Thursday, December 31st, 2015
Slush, Beech Hill Preserver, Rockport, Maine, 31 December 2015.

Slush.

It’s been a year—with lows and highs, long days and long nights, deep snows and balmy early winter days. Captain Jack got a staple and I got stitches, but we’re both all healed up now. And we had some wondrous Beech Hill hikes—hundreds of ’em.

Like today’s, as the year’s last sunset approached. Only one bird species on the hill—a pair of finches flew over—but some nice conversations with friendly people up there. Hope to have more of those in 2016.

But to wind this year down, I’d like to just show you a couple pictures of today.

And away we go, on another swing around the sun.

Birthday bird

Pileated Woodpecker, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 30 December 2015.

Pileated Woodpecker.

I got a Pileated Woodpecker for my birthday. A solitary male, the same bird (I’m sure) that I photographed a while ago excavating a birch by Beech Hill Road—heard it calling non-stop across the road this afternoon, then spotted it in the distance, climbing a tree.

Also saw (or heard) several other winter birds, despite the gray sky, the whitened earth, the spitting snow. Bunch of people decided to hike Beech Hill today—a day between Christmas and New Year’s. I imagine the same will hold true for the next few days. And the weekend.

Got a bunch of work done, too. And at the end of it, I drank a tasty ale, a gift from a good friend. I might have used up most of my birthdays, but I intend to make the most of the few I’ve got left.

Winter at last

Tuesday, December 29th, 2015
Fool on the hill, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 29 December 2015.

Fool on the hill.

Pretty good snowfall going on when I woke up. Fairly constant, never heavy, maybe four or five inches total when things wound down in early afternoon. Had a little freezing rain as Jack and I were hiking Beech Hill late in the day, but that was about it.

The temp was 15 degrees (F) at first light, and the wind was whipping on the hill. Definitely the first taste of winter.

Nobody else on the hill when we walked up and down, but I saw cross-country ski tracks and regular hiking tracks. Also saw a solitary, confused-looking Yellow-rumped Warbler fly by. And heard a chickadee.
