Pileated Woodpecker.
This sunny morning, as dog and I started up the hill, I heard the voice of a flicker. Immediately after that, I heard the voice of a Hairy Woodpecker. And right after that, I heard the unmistakably loud hammering of a Pileated Woodpecker. Three—along with the note of a White-throated Sparrow—to greet us.
Other interesting sightings: three or four Snow Buntings in overflight, and a single male Sharp-shinned Hawk.
Fall never fails to surprise.

Hermit Thrush.
Sixteen bird species on the hill this morning. Sixteen. More than in a couple weeks, at least—if memory serves. Most interesting to me is how Hermit Thrushes are lingering. Saw and/or heard at least two at Beech Hill, and one was hopping about on my front lawn with the robins.
[Note: lots of other birds on the lawn the past week or so, too.]

Eastern Bluebirds.
A damp but not cold morning. Temps in the 40s (F), not too much wind. Rain would come later, but not before Jack and I took a moderately late hike up Beech Hill.
The birds weren’t obvious, but they were around: chipping yellow-rumps, the notes of sparrows, a little group of bluebirds lending color to an otherwise gray landscape. The quay of a thrush. Crows in the crown of an ochre-colored tree. Heard the low, liquid cuck-cow! of a raven. Heard jays. Chickadees, of course.
Most memorable, I guess, were the bluebirds.
