Junco

Friday, October 31st, 2014
Dark-eyed Junco, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 31 October 2014.

Dark-eyed Junco.

Buncha little birds flitting about the chilly barrens of Beech Hill this mostly overcast afternoon, most of them Yellow-rumped Warblers. However, I also heard a bluebird, saw a solitary goldfinch, watched a nuthatch for a while, and got a fairly decent photo of a Dark-eyed Junco.

Figured I’d post the photo of the junco.

Tonight will get nippy,
Tomorrow comes rain,
The time falls back Sunday,
Then snow blows again.

Spectacle

Hermit Thrush, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 30 October 2014.

Hermit Thrush.

Some days just have a load of cool in ’em. This was one of those days.

Blueberry barren, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 30 October 2014.

Blueberry barren.

First was the early morning, and the chill in the air, and the bright sun that rose, splashing yellow light on the bronze oak leaves. The nip in the air at this time of year makes you just nervous enough to feel thrilled. No frost yet, but soon.

Second was the flock of geese that’s been browsing in a green, green grass field off Meadow Street. Perhaps they’re a nuisance these days, but I like to look at them.

Third was my afternoon hike with Jack, and the sun-and-clouds kind of sky, and the look of the cloud-shadows on the distant hills, and the familiar red blueberry barren, and the cooperative hermit thrush that made up for all the missed photos of yellow-rumps.

And, finally, there came a late-afternoon rainbow just as I walked out of work. Who doesn’t love a rainbow?

Evening hike

Wednesday, October 29th, 2014
Birch, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 29 October 2014.

Birch.

On account of how busy this day got—including a (routine) trip to the vet for both dog and cat—I didn’t get to hike with Jack until after 5 p.m. This time of year, that amounts to evening. (And DST ends in a few days.)

But we did have a brisk hike in the blue overcast. A few birds were about, but the light was dim. It was all I could do, in fact, to ID the hermit thrush bouncing down the rocks of the stone wall along Beech Hill Road. Good thing I’ve got a nice pair of Swarovski binocs.

Kind of nice, though—an evening hike.
