 Chestnut-sided Warbler. Quick late hike today with dog. No sapsuckers on the sap patches for the first time in a couple weeks, I bet. Did catch glimpse of other species—including two species of warblers feeding active fledglings (Common Yellowthroat, Chestnut-sided Warbler).
Kind of missed the sapsuckers.

 Chipping Sparrow. Really busy day of fog and overcast. Had to sneak out quickly before an afternoon appointment to hike Beech Hill with Jack.
 Yellow-bellied Sapsucker (and flies). Lots of people up there today, despite the grayness and coolness. Furtive birds still—including a little family of Chipping Sparrows. The juvenile female sapsucker was perched again on her favorite tree trunk, sipping away with the flies.
Other sparrow families, too, along with robins and waxwings and a singing Alder Flycatcher.
Tonight is cool and damp.

 Eastern Towhee (female). The birds—by the time Jack and I finally got up to Beech Hill this afternoon late—were being furtive. I understand it: they’ve got youngster to look after. In fact, I even enjoy it, because it makes me pay closer attention, and that makes for greater rewards upon a sighting.
Didn’t get an inordinate number of sightings, but a few were cool. Female towhee, Savannah Sparrow with its young, a solitary, notch-tailed House Finch perched atop a spruce, and the Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers showed up for yet another day.
I did get a couple photos of the landscape—i.e., without any birds in them. One was of the thistle, below.
