A calm day

Thursday, April 30th, 2015
Yellow-rumped Warbler, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 29 April 2015.

Yellow-rumped Warbler.

A calm day. Pretty calm. Chilly, but not too bad. Mostly cloudy again. I realized today I haven’t gone out cycling once yet this year. But I hear the weekend’s supposed to be warm.

My hike with Jack today was nice. We were alone up there until the very end. No hawks, lots of little birds. Dozens of yellow-rumps.

Spotted a towhee, a junco, and a secretive White-Throated Sparrow scratching about in last year’s leaves.

A calm day, today was.

Blown around

Cloudscape, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 28 April 2015.

Cloudscape.

Last night I dreamed I was outside wearing a t-shirt and jeans and thinking the jeans were too much for how warm and sunny it was. (I also heard someone singing a country tune called “Lobster Town, USA.”) Then I awoke to a sunny day—but a chilly one, and with a gusty wind.

Remnants.

Later, the clouds thickened, and it got really gray out, and my dog and I went for a hike.

No one else on the hill today. Too windy up there. Amazing gusts, which I’m happy I dressed for. But despite the crazy wind, I was able to ID a few birds.

And, in a calm part of the trail on the other side of the hill—in a little lee, you might say—I found what was left of an unlucky bird. Victim of a hawk, I guess. By the feathers, I’m pretty sure it’d been a robin.

Exciting times

Monday, April 27th, 2015
White-breasted Nuthatch, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 27 April 2015.

White-breasted Nuthatch.

Just a quick late-afternoon hike today—but, man, was the weather wild. We’d had periods of rain throughout the day, then periods of letup. Then late some patches of blue moved over, and the sun came out and beamed onto a warming scene. That’s about the time Jack and I headed out.

But then the clouds closed up again, and it rained again—but about the time we reached the hill, the rain tapered off. So the walk was fine.

Best sighting today: a bright little Fox Sparrow hanging in the pile of little trees just felled by a work party the other day. (In fact, there might’ve been a pair.)

These are exciting times.
