Thrushes, Hawks, and an Ovenbird

Saturday, May 13th, 2017
Veery, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 13 May 2017.

Veery.

Sun, light breeze, incoming birds, including first Veeries, Yellow Warblers, and Great Crested Flycatcher. One Veery was particularly agreeable—perching for a photo, hopping along the trail not far in front of Jack and me.

Hermit Thrush.

Saw an eagle, crows haranguing a raven, seven warblers species. And most exciting was a pair of Red-tailed Hawks that circled above the canopy as we descended the woods trail. The hawks were cool and unperturbed, taking their sweet time, as crows loudly escorted them above us. And one let out one of those rare amazing red-tail screams.

On a sad note: an Ovenbird lay dead at the back of Beech Nut, victim of an apparent window strike early this morning. I brought it down into the woods, where I could hear other Ovenbirds singing, and tossed it into some greenery by a stone wall—and right away a chipmunk poked its head out. And I thought, Oh great, that chipmunk’s gonna eat it.

But I suppose that’s just Nature’s way.

“There he is,” I said to Jack upon catching site of our first-of-year kestrel. I’ve had my eye peeled for several days for this dependable April arrival.
