Blue Birds

Friday, May 20th, 2016
Tree Swallow, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 20 May 2016.

Tree Swallow.

These blue-sky mornings, hiking with
my loyal dog, surrounded by
mosquitoes and black flies, I spy
a few noteworthy birds of blue.

Great Crested Flycatcher, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 20 May 2016.

Great Crested Flycatcher.

Bluebirds, of course—though none today—
and tree swallows, whose backs display
a silky sheen in daylight. Too,
occasionally, sky-blue jays.

This morning, though, I heard a bird—
emit a loud sharp spitting sound—
and just before it flew away
ID’d an Indigo Bunting.

Alas, no decent pictures, tho.

Turkey Vulture, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 19 June 2015.

Turkey Vulture.

Evidence this morning of overnight rain dried up quickly on the way to a glorious afternoon. Worked 9 to 5, then took a hike.

Northern Crescent, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 19 June 2015.

Northern Crescent.

Oddly quiet right out of the pickup. First bird today, in fact, was one of the sapsuckers (and the second was the other). Finally a few species began to call and sing. Same suspects generally, and dog and I walked over the summit and down into the woods a little ways. Only added Ovenbird down there.

But on the way back, I got a good look at a Turkey Vulture soaring fairly low over a brushy field. A lot of people think them gross and ugly, but I kind of take a likin’ to TVs.

Good sleeping weather

Sunday, May 31st, 2015
American Goldfinch pair, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 31 May 2015.

American Goldfinch pair.

Drizzly and damp early, but a little rain won’t stop me and Jack. Dim and dark, but plenty of bird activity in the woods of Beech Hill. Mostly voices—songs and notes and little yelps of alarm—but a few goldfinches at the summit stood out against the gray.

Tiny lichen, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 31 May 2015.

Tiny lichen.

Dark clouds approaching from the west chased us back down before taking our usual stroll down the open trail. Plenty of birds in the bottomlands, though: Black-throated Blue Warbler, Scarlet Tanager, White-breasted Nuthatch, Eastern Wood-pewee. All nesting down there again this year. Plus, I heard a drumming grouse.

Cool this evening. Should be good sleeping weather.
