Wren Again

Wednesday, September 1st, 2021
Rock Wren, East Millcreek, Salt Lake City, Utah, 01 September 2021.
Rock Wren.

Mostly overcast this morning. Not great air, but not so bad. Cool, with a breeze to start—but the breeze soon diminished.

Quiet at first. The second bird I saw was another Rock Wren. (Rusty enough that I thought it was a Canyon Wren at first.) Also heard a pair of Chukars—and got a good look at another Vesper Sparrow.

I love this quiet season. Birding’s a challenge. You’ve got to pay close attention, which pulls you out of your head and into the miraculous world.d

Young Dove

Thursday, July 15th, 2021

A nice, dry, cool morning. Again not overly remarkable for its wildlife sightings, but dog and I enjoyed it.

My bird of the day was a solitary juvie Mourning Dove, hanging out with a collection of finches (adults and youngsters). I like their motley, rumpled look—as if they’d slept last night in their clothes. The most unusual bird? I calling flicker. (Not rare, just quiet for a good while.)

Wonder what the morning will bring…
