I tend not to like to claim favorites. Have no favorite food, favorite color, favorite weather, favorite time of day. But I think my favorite wood-warbler is the Black-throated Blue.
Heard my first of the year yesterday. Heard another this morning toward the end of my hike with Captain Jack. The bird was nearer, so dog and I ventured off trail a little ways. The handsome bird was cooperative, flitting about singing his beautiful buzzy tune, even posed for a photo. As I was taking pictures, I heard a sharp chip note behind me, very near. Turned and saw a female of the species perched nearly within arm’s reach. Clearly these birds had chosen one another.
The song, the plumage. I love those little Black-throated Blues.
