What a Day

Tuesday, May 29th, 2018
Blackburnian Warbler, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 29 May 2018.

Blackburnian Warbler.

Black-billed Cuckoo, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 29 May 2018.

Black-billed Cuckoo.

Warm and summery. Mosquitos and other flies that birds like to eat attracted quite a few of ’em. In fact, surprisingly, I had three first-of-year birds: Cedar Waxwing (a little flock flying over), Blackburnian Warbler (singing high woodland canopy), and Philadelphia Vireo (which I ID’d from its song).

Plus, I scared up a pair of cuckoos, watched tanagers in the deeper woods, and, to top it off, heard the repeated ch-beks of a Least Flycatcher.

What a day.

Chilly Morn

Monday, May 28th, 2018
Mourning Dove, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 28 May 2018.

Mourning Dove.

Had way more bird species on my list this morning than I figured I would. ’Cause it was in the 40s (F) when first dog and I hit the hill. And misty. Breezy. But this is spring, after all. Plus, I hear tomorrow might make it into the 80s.

In fact, I enjoy a chilly morn.

Singer

Sunday, May 27th, 2018
Scarlet Tanager, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 27 May 2018.

Scarlet Tanager.

May and June in the woods of Maine means the voices of Scarlet Tanagers. I heard a couple or three today, got a good lock at one (male), and generally celebrated the species in my heart.

Tip: memorize the voice of the Scarlet Tanager, then scan the canopy for the singer.
