Yellow-rumped Warbler, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 14 November 2018.

Twenties (F) this morning, with a wind gusting to about 30 miles an hour. Bundled up in outside-in-winter attire and headed up the lonesome hill with Jack. Bright sun. More birds than I expected—including a flock of Snow Buntings and a yellow-rump that led me on a chase.

Caught up with it, though.

High pressure

Tuesday, October 6th, 2015
Yellow-rumped Warbler, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 06 October 2015.

Yellow-rumped Warbler.

We must be under a high-pressure system here on the 44th parallel, ’cause I should’ve worn shorts and sandals on my midday hike at Beech Hill with Jack today. Also, butterflies, dragonflies, grasshoppers, and other late-summer insects were flitting and fluttering all over the place. Plus, we came upon a sphinx caterpillar.

Sphinx caterpillar.

Another kind of pressure is on, meantime: I have to find a place to live in about three weeks. Looked at a couple of promising places today—very different, but both nice. Ch-ch-ch-changes.

We shall see.

Incoming

Sunday, April 21st, 2013
Crown and raven, Beech Hill, Rockport, Maine, 21 April 2013.

Crown and raven.

Up on on the hill early today. A cloudless, chilly morning. Birds awaited.

I recorded the most daily species all year, in fact—including a number of first-of-year birds (including ruby-throated kinglet, field sparrow, and Savannah sparrow). Heard a couple of birds I didn’t recognize, too, so probably the total exceeded the thirty-two on my list. Migrants flooding northward, their songs are ringing down the barren hillsides, that familiar spring excitement.

Yellow-rumps flitting through. A kestrel on the sod roof of Beech Nut. But the most excitement came after I heard the croak of a raven and looked up to see the big black bird being harassed by a smaller black crow. Several times I’ve watched ravens fly upside-down, but it never ceases to amaze.

Chilly and starry tonight.
