Yellow Warbler (male), Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 07 July 2023.
Yellow Warbler (male).

Another clear and warm and muggy morn with interesting bird activity. Heard many youngsters of various species begging for meals; heard the call of a Red-bellied Woodpecker; saw both Turkey Vulture and Wild Turkey.

Most notable: a group of three or four fledgling Purple Finches giving their parent finch(es) reason for some frantic hunting-and-feeding activity.

Tomorrow morning’s supposed to be foggy. We shall see!

F-f-fog?

Friday, June 30th, 2023
White-breasted Nuthatch, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 30 June 2023.
White-breasted Nuthatch.

Another foggy morning. How many is that in a row for dog and me? Five? Seven? Eight? And each morning’s atmosphere seems thicker than the last.

However, I’ve managed, somehow, to keep a decent species list all those days. And get a few bird photos. Most noteworthy today was the sound, in the foggy woodland, of a Pine Warbler. Also a pair of nuthatch species for a change. And the Northern Parula’s still hanging around down by the road.

So unhappy about the spread of beech leaf disease on Beech Hill, meanwhile. This blight came on suddenly and things don’t look good. But Nature’s always changing things, so who knows.

More fog tomorrow? Who knows?

A Foggy World

Wednesday, June 28th, 2023
Hermit Thrush, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 28 June 2023.
Hermit Thrush.

Another foggy morn for dog and me—thick fog, moisture-laden air, a soggy water world. I don’t mind the fog, even have come to take it as a challenge to manage to take a decent photograph.

Today’s was a cooperative Hermit Thrush, whining its alarm call on a branch in the woods just in front of us.

I loved this foggy day.
