Friday the Thirteenth

Friday, July 13th, 2018
Savannah Sparrow (juvie), Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 13 July 2018.

Savannah Sparrow (juvie).

Another cool, bright morning. Got to the hill early and encountered a shitload of birds. Many (most) with youngsters, of course—saw a few fledglings, including a bright, fresh Savannah Sparrow on one of the Beech Nut walls. Listed my first White-throated Sparrow in quite a while. Heard another Red-breasted Nuthatch.

Eastern Bluebird, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 13 July 2018.

Eastern Bluebird.

This summer, seemingly more Wood Lilies, bluebirds, and Barn Swallows than I can remember. Monarchs the past couple days.

I love Friday the Thirteenth.

Thanks, Nature, for Milkweed

Monarch laying eggs on the underside of milkweed leaves, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 09 July 2018.

Monarch laying eggs on the underside of milkweed leaves.

Fun morning on the hill. Lovely weather, ran into friends, spied a wayward Scarlet Tanager, discovered two pairs of bluebirds are taking over nearby swallow boxes—they had a four-way scuffle, even—and watched more than one female Monarch laying eggs in assorted milkweed patches.

Scarlet Tanager (male), Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 09 July 2018.

A Beautiful July Morning

Saturday, July 7th, 2018
Great Blue Heron, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 07 July 2018.

Great Blue Heron.

A beautiful morning, a day much cooler than yesterday. Nearly cloudless, with a flushed woodcock, Great Blue Heron flyover, and more Barn Swallows teaching their fledglings to hunt flies.

Jack and I had nice visits with dogs and humans at the summit also.

A beautiful July morning.
