Lazuli Bunting (male feeding fledgling), Wasatch Range, East Millcreek, Utah, 09 August 2019.
Lazuli Bunting (male feeding fledgling).

Welp, I moved to Utah. Salt Lake City, the East Millcreek neighborhood, with steep mountain trails just up the street from my door.

Today I finally took my first hike with Captain Jack, and ended up with a life list bird: Lazuli Bunting. Had never seen one before, but I knew just what they were when I saw the dad feeding the hungry youngster.

Magpies are everywhere out here.

Soon to be rising

Thursday, April 16th, 2015

White-breasted Nuthatch (at prospective nest hole), near Clam Cove, Rockport, Maine.

White-breasted Nuthatch (at prospective nest hole).

A promising sort of day. A little chillier than yesterday, but not too much. A little busier, too, seemed like—but probably wasn’t. Certainly busier bird-wise. Fourteen species at Beech Hill—including a kestrel and a kinglet and a croaking raven. Apparently just missed a harrier, though.

Eighteen birds in all, a number that’s sure soon to be rising.

I wish I could afford a better camera.

Thoughts of Monhegan

Thursday, September 4th, 2014

Chestnut-sided Warbler, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 04 September 2014.

Chestnut-sided Warbler.

This morning at work on Meadow Street, I heard the call of a loon out the skylight above me. Twice. I stood and looked up through the skylight into the blue-blue sky, and there circled a Broad-winged Hawk. And, above it quite a ways, a Turkey Vulture. Three species in about ten seconds. Within a few feet of my desk chair.

Later, at Beech Hill with Jack, the birds were scarce. More dragonflies, more Black Swallowtail butterflies, more waxwings. Toward the end of our walk, I heard chickadees and so of course stopped to see what else accompanied them. A couple Red-eyed Vireos, as usual.

Back at the parking lot, I happened to see a bird flit up to a branch not far overhead: a quiet, still Chestnut-sided Warbler.

I’ve started to look forward to Monhegan.
