Chilly

Monday, September 10th, 2018
Northern Flicker, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 10 September 2018.

Northern Flicker.

This morning was so chilly that I wore a hoodie, jeans, and socks with my sandals. Right about 50 degrees (F) when Jack and I arrived at the hill. Thought there might be some migrating birds around—and there were.

The most noteworthy among them: a Northern Harrier that floated above and beyond the treetops just as we returned.

Cardinal and Hawk

Sunday, September 9th, 2018
Broad-winged Hawk, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 09 September 2018.

Broad-winged Hawk.

I forgot my binoculars this morning. First time ever, I’m pretty sure. But I still managed to spot quite a few bird species—and even photograph a very still female cardinal after hearing her soft chip, then gazing into the greenery and seeing what looked like a prematurely red leaf, perfectly still, in the shape of a female cardinal.

Also happened upon a juvie Broad-winged Hawk on a utility line.

Had a wonderful little fallout on the hill this cool early morning. Two kinglet species, several warblers and vireos—including a Philadelphia Vireo. Thirty species in all.
