 Common yellowthroat.
Had an early hike with Jack today. Spent nearly two hours wandering around all the Beech Hill trails. Lots of birds on my list—mostly heard, true, and of those seen, many had bits of food in their beaks. The first day of summer means gaping bird mouths to feed.
 Veery.
You could hear faint whispery whines here and there—the voices of the hatchlings. And the adults that would pop up to scold us along the trail often made odd-sounding chucks and chips, considering their mouths were crammed full of insects. A comely little yellowthroat. A catbird. An angry, protective veery.
Lovely, lovely day. Also went out to eat with my friend Gus, had a nice bike ride, worked, and hiked Mount Battie with a bunch of other people to celebrate another friend’s birthday.
And tonight, first-of-year fireflies, right on cue.
Yep. The longest day of the year.

 Savannah sparrow.
A day after not that many birds showed up, a lot did. Not all in person, but I heard ’em. Including such mildly exotic species like red-bellied woodpecker, bluebird, and a loon in flight. You can just tell what’s going on out there—chicks are hatching, fledglings are trying their wings, parents are getting nervous. Savannah sparrows are singing again, and I got hollered at by a few ovenbirds down the lower wooded trail.
 Ovenbird.
And such a lovely evening tonight.

 Common yellowthroat.
Today unfolded early, brightly, coolly. I enjoyed the heck out of my Beech Hill hike first thing with Jack—mosquitos be damned. At first the avian life was pretty scarce. I counted a half-dozen species by voice before I saw a single bird. By the time I counted a dozen, I’d seen exactly two. Finally, toward the summit fields, I began to see them flitting around.
 Northern crescent.
Highlights were the call of a pileated woodpecker, the soft fluting of a bluebird, the lovely fragrant cool air.
In afternoon, I had a long, hard bike ride—made my legs sore and my body generally feel really, really good. Even added a few birds to my list.
Tonight, the moon rose far toward the south, skirting a collection of pink-tinged clouds.
