Angry weather

Friday, December 21st, 2012
Birch, Beech Hill, Rockport, Maine, 21 December 2012.

Birch.

Today I was sure Jack and I would find no other vehicles parked in the Beech Hill lot when we arrived. A spattering rain, 40–50 m.p.h. winds (with higher gusts) tossing us every which way, just generally wet, angry weather. All I encountered, bird-wise, was a chickadee.

Returning, to my shock, we met another hiker coming up the trail.

Beech Hill List
Beginning at 3 p.m., I hiked the open trail.

1. Black-capped chickadee** (v)

Elsewhere

2. American crow
3. Herring gull

Two woodpeckers

Thursday, December 20th, 2012
Outbound ferry, Beech Hill, Rockport, Maine, 20 December 2012.

Outbound ferry.

Another busy day. A lot of running around early, a nice little party at the house of new friends late, a pleasant Beech Hill hike with dog in the middle of things. Not a lot of bird life—but I did hear two woodpecker species in quick succession, which was kind of nice.

Beech Hill List
Beginning at 2:45 p.m., I hiked the open trail.

1. Black-capped chickadee
2. White-breasted nuthatch (v)
3. Northern flicker (v)
4. Downy woodpecker (v)
5. American coot

Elsewhere

6. American crow
7. Herring gull

Bird Report is a (sometimes intermittent) record of the birds I encounter while hiking, see while driving, or spy outside my window. —Brian Willson
