Three thrushes

Friday, May 8th, 2015
Veery, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 08 May 2015.

Veery.

Much cooler today, and windy. Wore a sweatshirt over a t-shirt and still felt a little chilly. Didn’t expect to list a lot of species—but the birds had other ideas. Especially the thrushes.

Wood Thrush.

Robins were singing in the chill today.

Also came upon a parula flitting about in an apple tree with new tiny leaves. Saw a raven three times, croaking the latter two, check out me and Jack the first. Barely caught sight of a broad-wing flying quickly into a copse of trees. Ended up with thirty-one species. Most memorable to me?

Three thrushes.

Tonight, as I let Jack out one last time, we heard a deer gallop off into the trees out back—and across the road, in the dark woods behind the little Claddagh Motel, the cries of a fox. They sounds almost like a human woman in distress, that loud, mournful cries.

Little birds

Thursday, May 7th, 2015
Eastern Towhee, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 07 May 2015.

Eastern Towhee.

I thought I’d gotten up earlier than I actually had this morning. Six a.m., and 7 a.m. seemed about the same degree of early, or something. But still, a Nice hike, with a lot of good birds—if not the flood of yesterday. And no new 2015 species.

Broad-winged Hawk, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 07 May 2015.

Broad-winged Hawk.

But I did get a Broad-winged Hawk, heard the thrilling croak of a raven. And got a good look at a Nashville Warbler.

And something from yesterday I forgot to mention: a little head-bobbing display two Song Sparrows were engaged in—males, I assume, and territory (and/or female) being at the root of their dispute.

This is when the greenery grows fast: ferns unfurling, leaves emerging, grass growing. And everywhere, little birds on the move.

Good birds

Wednesday, May 6th, 2015

Field Sparrow, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 06 May 2015.

Field Sparrow.

An early morning, a flood of good birds. For whatever reason—a convergence of the season, meteorological conditions, and just the miracle of the universe—a bunch of new species showed up. Thirty-seven species, eleven of them warblers (three of those first-of-year birds), a first-of-year Veery, video of a pair of crows harassing a raven, video of a singing Northern Parula. Two-plus hours of hiking with my good dog Jack.

Here are a few photos.
