Wood Thrush

Friday, June 9th, 2023
Wood Thrush, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 09 June 2023.
Wood Thrush.

Got busy this morning and had a late start today. But yet another day of dramatic skies and—like yesterday—a list of thirty-nine bird species.

Most notable to me was the surprise appearance of a Wood Thrush right along the trail right in front of dog and me. I even managed a not-great photo of it. Also noteworthy was a solitary first-of-year Bank Swallow flying over the summit of the hill.

Looking forward to what tomorrow might bring.

Showery

Sunday, June 4th, 2023
Common Yellowthroat, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 04 June 2023.
Common Yellowthroat in the rain.

Was supposed to rain today, and it did. Waited a couple three hours until a little letup occurred, then dog and I hit the main trail. As expected, we got a little wet.

Also as expected, I ended up with few birds on my list. This rainy stretch comes from a sort of spring mini–nor’easter swirling out over the bay, and the wind was whipping through the trees. Many species were quiet—didn’t hear a single Red-eyed Vireo!—and I decided not to hike far into the woods.

But it felt good to get out there in the nippy (mid-40s (F)), moist, breezy air. I like a change of pace—even if the change is gonna last a while….

Two Hikes

Friday, June 2nd, 2023
Black-and-white Warbler (male), Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 02 June 2023.
Black-and-white Warbler (male).

Two hikes again today—early one with Jack at the Wellness Trail, later one alone at Beech Hill Preserve. Both good, interesting, satisfying.

Things were pretty dry this morning, which makes this evening’s rain (including mini-thundershower) especially welcome. A good number of birds both places, along with assorted mammals (chipmunk, squirrel, deer). Noteworthy were two singing Scarlet Tanagers, but I got no glimpse of either.

This coming week is supposed to be a wet one. Will be an interesting—and no doubt fascinating—change of pace.
