Yellow-rumped Warbler, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 02 May 2023.
Yellow-rumped Warbler.

Two firsts-of-year this morning of changing atmospheres: a Gray Catbird, and a Black-and-white Warbler. Will be many more in days to come.

Weather-wise, the morning began overcast and lowery but ended with a half-blue sky and lovely light. Above, more Broad-winged Hawks moving through, and Turkey Vultures. Also a random vee of twenty Double-crested Cormorants (first-of-year birds at Beech Hill).

Crows and ravens and jays and many sparrows. Woodpeckers and finches and thrushes. I could possibly feel content if a day like this one repeated until the day I died.

Rain, Wind, Fog

Brown Thrasher (first of year), Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 01 May 2023.
Brown Thrasher (first of year).

First came rain—a heavy, soaking, overnight rain. Then came high winds (which broke a series of utility poles on Route 1 nearby). Then came a very wet, heavy fog. However, during my brief morning hike with dog, I encountered some pretty fun birds.

Most notable was among the last birds I encountered: a first-of-year Brown Thrasher singing loudly down by the road. Also there were sparrows, blackbirds, phoebes, and more.

About midday the sky began to clear and by evening, the day was bright and warm and calm.

(I do love the variety of weather we get here in coastal Maine.)

Spring Migration

Saturday, April 29th, 2023

This morning’s hike with dog happened under mostly blue skies, in mostly calm winds, and amid many, many bird species—thirty-four in all (a record for the year so far.

(Speaking of—exactly a year ago today is when Jack and I arrived back in Maine. Time flies.)

First-of-year bird? Black-throated Green Warbler. Other notable migrants would be three Broad-winged Hawks, a raven and a vulture, and multiple Blue-headed Vireos.

And in afternoon I got a good ride on my bike in.

Tomorrow will be rainy. In fact, so will the following three days. We shall see how it goes!
