when each bird flits too soon,
your shoulders sag, you curse or sigh,
and blame the tides or moon.
Alder Flycatcher.
Your dog’s cough spooks the flycatcher.
The tanager says, “Bye.”
You start your truck to drive away—
the hawk decides to fly.
And then the truth occurs to you,
that time flits too soon, too,
that right here now is where you are,
that living’s what you do.
