Highs and lows

American redstart, Beech Hill, Rockport, Maine, 03 June 2013.

American redstart.

A little thunder last night but not a lot of rain. The day that followed had highs and lows. Frustrations, but also a little cluster of rewards—and a nice long bike ride after the sun came out.

Wild iris, Beech Hill, Rockport, Maine, 03 June 2013.

Wild iris.

Jack and I didn’t get to Beech Hill until late for a change. Early evening, upper-60s (F), sun, mosquitoes out the ying-yang. Not the best time for birding, but not entirely unpleasant, either. A nice little breeze causing a rush in the new leaves of the trees. Highlights were a surprise kingbird at the summit, a singing wood thrush in the lower woods, and a first-of-year wild iris.

Earlier, while working with the windows open, I heard interesting stuff: the great crested fly (still hanging around). ospreys and laughing gulls, and the high whistle of a broad-wing.

The air tonight is fragrant and really, really lovely.
