Birds and Dogs

Thursday, December 10th, 2020
Cooper’s Hawk, East Millcreek, Salt Lake City, Utah, 10 December 2020.
Cooper’s Hawk.

A bit warmer this morning. A few clouds, a lot of haze—well, particulates—in the basin. Quite a few birds about, too.

Spied a Cooper’s Hawk early, and climbing the wooded canyon, came upon a large gathering of several species poking about in the old foliage. Chickadees, juncos, jays, a flicker, and another solitaire. More individual bird numbers there than I’ve ever encountered, I believe.

A fun hike otherwise, too—including a visit with two humans walking a half dozen dogs or so.

(Note: Spotted red-tail on the cell tower down in town by McDonald’s.)

Solitaire

Wednesday, December 9th, 2020
Townsend’s Solitaire, East Millcreek, Salt Lake City, Uah, 09 December 2020.
Townsend’s Solitaire.

A morning hike much like the past several mornings’ hikes, with sightings of the usual suspects, no great photo opps, nice views, crisp air. But the sky had a few high clouds, and the hike brought us to a Townsend’s Solitaire.

American Crow, East Millcreek, Salt Lake City, Uah, 09 December 2020.
American Crow.

I’ve likely said before how much I love this bird species—arguably my favorite in Utah so far. Unassuming yet well attired, not too flitty, nice eyering, an endearing call, and a lovely, sweet, rambling song. Usually I see them adorning a high branch on whatever scrub oak or juniper they happened to have handy.

Today I found one perched amid thick foliage as dog and ascended Coyote Canyon. It sat still as we crept closer (although clearly the bird knew we were there), and I got some nice photos. It felt like some kind of blessing.

And later, at the grocery store, I had only my fourth American Crow sighting in my six months in Utah. (And only my cawing crow.) Magpies and jays are nice, and all, but I really do miss crows.

Joint Was Jumpin’

Tuesday, December 8th, 2020
California Quail (in an apple tree), East Millcreek, Salt Lake City, Utah, 08 December 2020.
California Quail (in an apple tree).

Quietest morning up the mountain trails in a good while. Few bird species, and few birds generally. No Downy Woodpecker. Had I not spied some pigeons in the neighborhood, my count would’ve been half yesterday’s.

But the neighborhood was a-hoppin’. Big flock of California Quails converged on the side yard, where old apples have been falling from the big tree. A few fluttered up into the tree, in fact. (As did a finch who was partial to apples.) Collared-doves singing sweetly and calling raucously. Starlings.

The joint was jumpin’ today.
