Hawk in Afternoon

Red-tailed Hawk in afternoon.

The morning was cloudless (with a little ground-clinging smog below), with temperatures in the 30s (F). Not much wind to speak of—nor many bird species. About thirty juncos, and plenty of towhees and finches and such. Nothing extraordinary up the mountain trails, though.

So here’s a hawk I photographed from home this afternoon.

Sub-freezing again this morning, but calm and (mostly) cloudless. Wore new winter hiking boots, ditched my winter coat. (Good boots, no need of coat.) Had nice luck with birds again.

The usual species, for the most part. Most abundant? Dark-eyed Juncos. They were everywhere, chipping that sharp chip of theirs, uttering subtle trills, flashing those white-edged tailfeathers. Couple kinglets, bunch of chickadees, bunch of towhees—and another pair of Juniper Titmice.

Good hike with dog.

As forecast, the day dawned chilly. And by “chilly,” I mean a temperature of about 16 degrees (F), with a 20-mile-an-hour “breeze.” Gotta confess, I waited until the sun topped the ridge before we hit the trailhead, Jack and me.

Good choice. The sun at this altitude seems to warm the air at least 10 degrees, and along the trail under the ridge, the air was calm. Also, there were birds aplenty. Not an outlandish number of species, but a nice count overall. Plus, I got a decent photo or two.

Gonna warm up through the week, if the forecasts are to be believed.
