 Eastern Bluebird (fledgling).
Cool and mostly gray this morning, with rain on the way. Many more birds around than there were in spring—two, three times as many. As with all the bluebirds fluttering around. I must’ve seen three or four family’s worth, males, females, fledglings. Fledgling bluebirds are kind of cute, I gotta say.
On the way to the hill I spied a couple of turkey families—adults and a scattering of tiny poults.

 Cedar Waxwing.
The highlight of this morning’s hike were the three deer I saw grazing nonchalantly in broad daylight down the western slope. Two were antlered bucks. They looked exceptionally healthy.
 White-tailed Deer.
Plenty of birds, too—the usual suspects. Heard some woodland birds from the open fields. Waxwings in the spruces, chasing flies.

 Common Yellowthroat (mama).
Such a sweet, clear, cool morning. Fledglings all over the place (but hidden); their parents madly running down food. But the most thrilling several minutes happened at the Beech Hill summit, where one of summer’s annual fly hatches took place up in the spruce grove, and it drew multiple species to the tips of the trees—including a male Scarlet Tanager.
 Scarlet Tanager.
A memorable morning.
