Overcast early, but dry for a change. Took us a little time, but Jack and I made our way up to Beech Hill, where birds were singing and mosquitos were humming and the air hung damp and warm. Heard a great crested flycatcher, which was fun—but I’d just really like to get a good look at one for a change.
Right about the time we reached the summit, the sun emerged, and things immediately got a lot warmer and the wind picked up. And all around us where fledglings. Sparrows got fledglings, warblers got fledglings, thrushes got fledglings—it’s that fledgling time of year.
Now that the sun was out, a couple old friends reemerged down the lower wooded trail: the Blackburnian warbler and the black-throated blue. Oh, and the tanager.
Later I rode twenty miles on my bicycle. Then I mowed the long.
Now I’m kind of tuckered.
