Fledgling

Savannah Sparrow, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 21 June 2015.

Savannah Sparrow.

Rained like crazy on Father’s Day. Real gullywasher for a while there. But by mid-afternoon, the system had moved away—which was a cue for me and Jack to get on over to Beech Hill.

Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 21 June 2015.

Yellow-bellied Sapsucker (female).

Which we did. Surprised to see a car in the parking lot, and eventually we ran into two parties (one amounting to a Father’s Day daddy with a young son on his shoulders), but mostly it was damp and foggy and, oddly, quite birdy. Likely the “wake of the storm” effect: after having laid low all day, the bird life was itchin’ to get out and find something to eat.

About halfway up, I spied a sparrow hopping along the trail in front of us. A tiny thing, clearly a fledgling. A peek through my binocs confirmed it as a Savannah Sparrow. (Kind of surprised me, as I thought they were still young nestlings at this point.) This bird was issuing a soft squay! note, and an adult was yipping out warnings from the blueberry field, but the youngster was adept enough to gobble down an earthworm. My guess is it was the first to leave the nest.

And surprisingly, I heard a bunch of calling, singing species—nearly a dozen birds in all.

Plus, I had a lovely long chat with my one and only dearly beloved kiddo. [Hi, Sweetie!]

Happy Summer Solstice everyone.

American Lady

Savannah Sparrow.

Today’s hike coincided with a gathering of volunteers and friends and neighbors of Beech Hill to hear more about Phase Two of the hundredth anniversary capital campaign to improve, restore, and spruce up various other aspects of the preserve. And the weather couldn’t have been better.

American Lady.

The get-together was great. The campaign worthwhile. (To learn more visit the Coastal Mountains Land Trust website.) And the birds showed up, as well.

E.g., the immature eagle that flew by just as Ian’s presentation was about to begin. The Scarlet Tanager that decided to sing from the summit about the time Jack and I had descended about half-way. The female sapsucker. The pair of Broad-winged Hawks.

I also took a photo of an American Lady.

Hearing voices

Thursday, June 11th, 2015
Chestnut-sided Warbler, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 11 June 2015.

Chestnut-sided Warbler.

One odd thing about my hike today with Jack is the fact that—on a warm, sunny, hazy afternoon, with light winds and a fresh sweet landscape—we were alone up there today. Aside from the birds.

Standoff, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 11 June 2015.

Standoff.

And even they made themselves pretty scarce. In fact, I only saw six of the twenty species on today’s list. The IDs of the rest came from songs and calls.

One I saw was a hummingbird sipping at sapsucker holes.

Another was a Chestnut-sided Warbler shaking off after taking a bath.

I also saw a phoebe with a bug in its bill.

Mostly, though I was just hearing voices.
