First Tree Sparrow

White-throated Sparrow.

First trace of snow this morning. Brisk hike with Jack. Saw my first American Tree Sparrow of the season—but missed a good chance at a photo. In fact, my only bird pic from today is this blurry one of a White-throated Sparrow. (I swear that’s what it is.)

Called Up a Shrike

I called it up,
the Northern Shrike.
To dog I said,
“Let’s find a shrike,”
and there it sat
atop the scrub,
hints of its last
meal on its face.

A Flock of Horned Larks

Horned Larks.

As flock of Horned Larks
circled Beech Nut,
the hut at the top of Beech Hill,
dog and I stood within the wide stone veranda
peering out in various directions,
watching them,
listening to their twittering.

At last they settled in a lower field,
out of the wind,
far away.
