Sparrow Before the Storm

Tuesday, February 12th, 2019
House Sparrow, Rockland, Maine, 12 February 2019.
House Sparrow.

A bare, cold, breezy morning. An overcast had begun to creep into the sky as Jack and I hiked the hill. Noteworthy bird: a solitary Northern Shrike perched in the tip of one a tree in the spruce grove at the summit. Took off before I could get a decent photo, I didn’t see which direction.

Noteworthy elsewhere, I saw a few turkeys crossing a parking lot a stone’s throw from Route 1, and the friendly little flock of House Sparrows at Good Tern Co-op in Rockland posed for pics.

Tomorrow all will be snow-covered again.

Return of the Shrike

Saturday, February 2nd, 2019
Northern Shrike, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 02 February 2019.
Northern Shrike.

It’d been a few weeks—maybe a month or more—since I’d seen one. But there it was, a Northern Shrike, perched alone as they do on the tiniest of twigs at the tip of a young hardwood. Waiting.

As a long-time vegetarian, it might seem ironic how crazy I am about these little meat-eating songbirds, but I am. They’re regular visitors in winter to Beech Hill (although I saw none the past two, for whatever reason), which seems to have perfect habitat. Plenty of small rodents active in the cold season; plenty of mouse and vole tracks in the snow today.

This one didn’t come close, but I got a distant photo. One of six species on the hill on this chilly morning.

Ravens on the Hill

Saturday, December 22nd, 2018

Common Raven, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 22 December 2018.

Common Raven.

Muddy morn after a long stretch of rain. Maybe one or two small scraps of snow remain. Temps up to 50 degrees (F) or so. Little birds picking around in the lees of a fairly stout southeast wind—little birds other than three crows and a pair of ravens.

(I like crows a lot. I love ravens.)
