Hermit Thrush.

Cold fingers this morning. Temps in the lower 40s (F) at first, and a stout east wind, and few birds about. But a I did see a few about—including, at the end of my hike with dog, a solitary Hermit Thrush.

Hawk Migration

Cooper’s Hawk, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 23 September 2018.

Cooper’s Hawk.

My past few daily lists have included hawks. They tend to move in batches during fall, in my experience—sometimes in very large swift batches. Today’s batch was small and leisurely—just two hawks, and in no big hurry.

First Day of Fall

American Crow and Red-tailed Hawk, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 22 September 2018.

American Crow and Red-tailed Hawk.

Early hike, not too cold, semi-cloudy, crows and a hawk. Alas, a dead flying squirrel at the summit. Lent a sad note to this equinoctial day.
