Beyond balmy

Yellow warbler, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 04 July 2013.

Yellow warbler.

Slept a little late, and the morning had already gone warm, so Jack and I dashed off for a hike up Beech Hill, which was a warm and birdy place. We also encountered mosquitos, deer flies, people and dogs.

Blackburnian warbler.

Had some nice chats at the summit, where the wind through the porch of Beech Nut cooled my sweaty brow. Had a nice little photo session with a female yellowthroat—then, down in the lower wood, a brief engagement with a Blackburnian warbler. Finally, as we were piling back into the truck nearly three hours after we’d emerged, I was surprised to hear the voice of a northern parula.

In afternoon, I took a long bike ride, which had long hot stretches and cool glides through shade. It also had an exciting moment when a broad-winged hawk crossed Route 1 directly toward me and not a dozen feet above my head.

A lovely—if beyond balmy—Independence Day.
