Common Yellowthroat, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 03 June 2015.

Common Yellowthroat.

Last cold day for a while, I hope—although it did reach the 50s (F), and we had no rain. Nor any high wind. A little sun even. I worked while Jack napped until late in the afternoon.

Then we took a hike.

Eastern Phoebe, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 03 June 2015.

Eastern Phoebe.

Perhaps seeming to sense a change in the weather, the Beech Hill birds were active. Many calling, and a few flitting about. Someone had cleared some young birches along the trail, and my heart sank a little at the timing of it, because I’m pretty sure a pair of nesting Song Sparrows were affected. But a family of Yellowthroats were still active across the trail there.

And the Beech Nut phoebes have hatched. I saw the mother arrive, and as she chipped at me and Jack, I heard their tiny voices in the eaves.

Alone on the hill

Monday, June 1st, 2015
Song Sparrow, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 01 June 2015.

Song Sparrow.

First day of steady rain in a while—maybe all spring so far. But it’s no longer May, and May is the month head up early through the woods, so I didn’t feel too bad waiting for a break in the rain. The break came pretty close to exactly the time Jack and I got out of the pickup. Cold for June, 50 degrees (F) or below. Not many birds along the open trail.

Aside from them, dog and I were alone on the hill today.

Good sleeping weather

Sunday, May 31st, 2015
American Goldfinch pair, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 31 May 2015.

American Goldfinch pair.

Drizzly and damp early, but a little rain won’t stop me and Jack. Dim and dark, but plenty of bird activity in the woods of Beech Hill. Mostly voices—songs and notes and little yelps of alarm—but a few goldfinches at the summit stood out against the gray.

Tiny lichen, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 31 May 2015.

Tiny lichen.

Dark clouds approaching from the west chased us back down before taking our usual stroll down the open trail. Plenty of birds in the bottomlands, though: Black-throated Blue Warbler, Scarlet Tanager, White-breasted Nuthatch, Eastern Wood-pewee. All nesting down there again this year. Plus, I heard a drumming grouse.

Cool this evening. Should be good sleeping weather.
