Mighty fine day

Saturday, June 6th, 2015
Pine Warbler, near Clam Cove, Rockport, Maine, 06 June 2015.

Pine Warbler.

Man, what a day. I suppose when you’ve had to endure a series of gray, cold June days and a spectacularly sunny, animated, bright, green, windy, big cloud day comes along, you just appreciate it a little more. Or something. Whatever—it was cool to just peek out my window to see a little female American Redstart bouncing around my driveway, and a moment later find a tiny female Pine Warbler in the trees above the back deck.

Eastern Phoebe.

On my afternoon hike with Jack today, I saw a flock of Rock Pigeons fly over the Beech Hill slopes—pretty sure that’s the first time I’ve seen pigeons up there.

And come late afternoon, I attended a lovely get-together at a friend’s in Owls Head, right on the water. A Northern Parula was flitting about high in the spruces around her place, and a pair of phoebes were keeping an eye on their porch-light nest.

A mighty fine day, all in all.

Cognitive dissonance

Friday, June 5th, 2015
Song Sparrow, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 05 June 2015.

Song Sparrow.

Turned out to be a busy ol’ day today. Worked clear through five o’clock without realizing it—and so grabbed Jack in a hurry and headed out for a hike. Another chilly hike, turns out. Overcast again today, temperatures in the 50s (F). Been a crazy June, so far. A crazy year, weather-wise—record cold, heavy winter snow, followed by a spring drought, while the rest of the country has been enjoying record warmth. Humans are fuckin’ with our planet’s atmosphere, scientists agree, but the unwashed (or too-well-scrubbed) masses continue to call B.S. Cognitive dissonance in action.

American Crow, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 05 June 2015.

American Crow.

But enough of all that—the hike was chilly but good. Brisk. Plenty of bird life, including a hummingbird following a Hairy Woodpecker around. Also a booming grouse—booming very near the Beech Hill Road parking lot, in fact.

Tomorrow’s supposed to be a bit more seasonable.
