Blushing trees

American Crow, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 05 September 2015.

American Crow.

Lots of activity lately. Work activity, hunting for a new place activity, bird activity. In today’s late-in-the-day hike, Jack and I didn’t run into too many people or dogs (the same number of each, actually—three), but I counted fourteen bird species.

They were lurking in the brush, flitting around in the blushing trees, or winging low over the barrens.

Actually, the crows were the only ones doing the latter.

Surrounded by ’rumps

Yellow-rumped Warbler, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 04 October 2015.

Yellow-rumped Warbler.

Lovely cool evening hike at Beech Hill with Jack today. Many dogs around—at least nine or ten, and maybe a dozen. Also many Yellow-rumped Warblers.

October crows, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 04 October 2015.

October crows.

So many yellow-rumps, in fact, that when we got to the summit spruce grove, I stood there for a long time just watching them flit in and out of the trees, hunting flies. I bet there were at least three, four dozen up there.

Towhee still. Robins around also. And a mini-convention of crows down toward the bay.

Road trip

American Redstart, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 28 September 2015.

American Redstart.

Took my daughter down to the Portland Jetport this afternoon, my first trip there for quite a few years. (Only made one wrong turn.) As I write this, she’s still winging her way back to L.A. Sure was great to see her—and introduce her to Monhegan. Memorable times.

Saw a bunch of Turkey Vultures on our sunny trip south and back. Jack went, too, so on our return in late afternoon, we took a hike to get the blood moving. Saw a Turkey Vulture up there, too. Along with two ravens. Two warbler species—one of which eluded a spectacularly teed-up photo opportunity.

Coming down the hill, we ran into many people and dogs hiking up. They were there for the moonrise.
