Winter

Tuesday, December 21st, 2021
Lesser Goldfinch, East Millcreek, Salt Lake City, Utah, 21 December 2021.
Lesser Goldfinch.

Although local reporters have been pretending it arrived early with all the snow, now it’s technically, astronomically, officially winter. My first hike of the season with dog was a fun one, if rather quiet bird-wise. Still, several species hung out with us—mostly chickadees and goldfinches.

First thing this morning at home, I watched a kestrel flutter up toward the foothills; we followed soon after. There were deer and and a cottontail, too.

All in all, a good first winter’s day.

Symbiosis

Sunday, December 19th, 2021

If you’ve been following these ramblings, you’ll know by now that I love the Big Sagebrush plant. Love the bonsai-looking trunks, the rounded shape of the little leaves, and (especially) the sharp, invigorating smell of a crushed sprig of leaves (after asking politely to pluck it).

Turns out Lesser Goldfinches love this plant also—in particular the seeds. I caught a flock of ’em chowing down on sagebrush seeds during my morning hike with Captain Jack. First I’d noticed this symbiotic love relationship.

Today was a bright day, close to the shortest of the year. Lengthening days will begin again soon.

Good Fortune

Friday, December 17th, 2021

Still a few more days left fall, but today seemed rather like a winter’s day. Dog returned in fine shape for our morning hike, with three or four fresh inches of snow on the trails. Not many birds, but a bunch of deer.

The highlight was my forgetting to zip up my pouch pocket after changing the GoPro battery, leaving my Garmin EDGE to tumble out into the soft snow somewhere. I retraced my footsteps (twice, the second time with Jack) and managed to find the thing while kicking the snow on the trail.

(Not the first thing I’ve recovered here after losing it along the snowy trail.)
