Waxwing Heaven

Friday, August 11th, 2017
Still life, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 11 August 2017.

Still life.

So many birds on the hill today. And a fly catch, drawing waxwings from miles around. And hummingbirds—two chased each other around the summit spruce grove. And a Least Flycatcher. Ch-BEK! Ch-BECK!

Blue Sky and Hummingbirds

Monday, August 7th, 2017
Cedar Waxwing, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 07 August 2017.

Cedar Waxwing.

Eastern Bluebird, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 07 August 2017.

Eastern Bluebird.

On a cool, cool morning
under a blue, blue sky
I heard hummingbirds chattering to each other
and looked up to see them chasing,
two ruby-throated hummingbirds,
chasing fast.

I heard and saw them later, too—
at least I assume they were the same birds
I saw in the earlier chase,
zipping about and talking to each other.
And a third time I saw them,
chasing a phoebe.

Later, I saw one of the hummingbirds
perhaps a young one,
fleeing what looked like two bees.

Broken Camera

Sunday, August 6th, 2017
Turkey Vulture, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 06 August 2017.

Turkey Vulture.

Started up Beech Hill with Jack early today, stopped to take a photo, and my viewfinder went black. Turns out my digital camera’s shutter is on the blink.(“Blink”—O, the irony.) For a few minutes there I felt lost, confused, discombobulated. Then I hurried home to grab my old squeaky camera, the well-used one with a scrape on the lens.
