A Warm One

Sunday, June 21st, 2020
Blue-gray Gnatcatcher, East Millcreek, Salt Lake City, Utah, 21 June 2020.
Blue-gray Gnatcatcher.

Aaand, right on schedule—a toasty warm hike today. It might not have been so warm had Jack and I not slept late, but man and dog had places to go, so we went those places, as always.

The heat might’ve daunted the birds some—that and the job of keeping everyone safe and hidden—because I didn’t encounter many species. Still da bunch of buntings and towhees (as always, I have come to realize). And plenty of finches and hummingbirds and gnatcatchers.

I’m kinda taking a liking to gnatcatchers.

Solstice

Saturday, June 20th, 2020
Golden Eagle, East Millcreek, Salt Lake City, Utah, 20 June 2020.
Golden Eagle.

Pretty chilly in the mountain shade this morning of the first day of summer. But the sun warmed things quickly. Dog and I hiked our favorite circuit, about !,200 feet up along the ridge overlooking Millcreek Canyon.

Up on that ridge, I spied a solitary Golden Eagle circling lazily in the blue. Somehow a fitting sign of the solstice.

Summer’s Eve

Friday, June 19th, 2020
Woodhouse’s Scrub-jay, East Millcreek, Salt Lake City, Utah, 19 June 2020.
Woodhouse’s Scrub-jay.

Another cool morning. Clear skies, just a whisper of breeze. Plenty of bird life up the mountain trails—including another peek at the Bullock’s Oriole(s) along one particular stretch.

Just a lovely day—and evening. Looking forward to tomorrow.
