 White-breasted Nuthatch.
Big rains overnight left the trail a bit muddy this morning, but that didn’t bother Jack, the birds, or me. Little birds were poking about in the trees encircling the parking lot, and crows were circling the summit. The temperature neared 50 degrees (F)—but then started to dip come evening, when a bright spattering of stars came out.
 American Crow.
I can dig a good spattering of stars.

 Young Eastern Phoebe at play.
Hopping and flitting and fiddling around the hill this morning were many of this year’s crop of new birds. Juvie Song Sparrows chasing each other. Cedar Waxwings, all gawky and freckled, perched atop the spruces, catching flies. The youthful caw! of a very young crow.
You’ve gotta grow up in a hurry around here.
