 Chestnut-sided warbler (juvie).
Another busy ol’ day. Too busy for a bike ride, even—but Jack and I did take our routine Beech Hill hike. Sun, warm, breeze, a few looming clouds. At first not many birds made themselves apparent. The usual species. Notably, though, a white-throated sparrow popped up at the summit flitted up into one of the spruce trees.
 Common yellowthroat.
Saw young chestnut-sided warblers again. Yellowthroats were also quiet. Did hear a yellow warbler (missing yesterday); did not hear or see bluebirds or waxwings.
Returning, nearing the parking lot, I heard a black-billed cuckoo very near and we froze. Tried sneaking slowly up on it, but I just can’t seem to spot those guys in the thick greenery. Also, maybe my hearing isn’t directional enough these days. Oh, well.
After a flurry of last-minute species (mostly heard, except for a broad-wing, which flew suddenly over), I ended up with twenty-one on my list somehow.
Calm and mild this evening, with a waxing moon.

 Eastern bluebird (juvenile).
The first cloudless day in I don’t know how long. Coolish, too. Lovely.
 Song sparrow (juvenile).
Work, work, work, then play. First I rode my bike around (ahh), then I grabbed Jack and hiked all over Beech Hill. We started on the wooded side, passed a bunch of woodpeckers—a pair of downies chasing, a pair of hairies chasing—the thrushes, warblers, a cuckoo, waxwings, sparrows with youngsters. At the summit, we met a fellow hiker and her dog and chatted a while. Saw a phoebe, a pair of house finches, and (astonishingly) a solitary, light-colored rock pigeon that flew low above the blueberry fields then turned and sailed directly over Beech Nut.
Coming down the open trail, we passed about a half dozen bluebirds, most of them kiddos. A singing chipping sparrow down by Beech Hill Road.
Coming back up and over, I heard (then saw) my first crow. And the last species on today’s list: another woodpecker, a pileated, hollering from down in the trees.

 Common yellowthroat.
More rain overnight. Overcast, cool, foggy day. Busy time at the office. Late hike with Jack.
 Black-eyed susan.
Lots of singing birds, several scolding bird parents, a few noisy fledglings, a solitary mallard flapping swiftly—and rather incongruously—close to the summit fields of Beech Hill.
Plenty of wood lilies dot the fields now, and blueberries continue to ripen (much to Jack’s delight). Took photos of a yellowthroat and a black-eyed susan. Yellow things.
Although we stuck to the open trail today, I still ended up with twenty-six birds.
