Thawy

Thursday, January 13th, 2022
Black-billed Magpie, East Millcreek, Salt Lake City, Utah, 13 January 2022.
Black-billed Magpie.

This morning’s hike with dog was a quick, quiet one. Similar to the past couple mornings but a tad bit warmer and thawier. Not as much excitement as yesterday, but a couple-three birds did pose for pics.

Smoggy down in the city, a lot less snow on the deer trails, fewer deer. Dry conditions expected to continue.

Who knows what tomorrow might bring?

Eagle

Wednesday, January 12th, 2022
Golden Eagle, East Millcreek, Salt Lake City, Utah, 12 January 2022.
Golden Eagle.

Decided to hike with Captain Jack earlier this morning, to compare with yesterday (a similar morning). Was much quieter than yesterday to start—but then things got interesting in a hurry.

First I watched an eagle fly above us, headed for a ridge to the north. I watched it touch down on a rock and begin to preen. Then I heard the solitaire again. And then a flock of what I’m pretty sure were redpolls—but I couldn’t tell for sure from their calls. Then we came upon a random Mourning Dove (first in a good while). Finally, on our return, I spied a secretive bird with an eye ring: a Hermit Thrush. Did not expect one of those at this time of year.

Searched for the old Garmin I dropped on the trail yesterday. Found it right on the trail. (Not sure how I missed it yesterday.) And as we headed back down to the switchback, the eagle was still there.

Flicker, Day 2

Tuesday, January 11th, 2022
Northern Flicker, East Millcreek, Salt Lake City, Utah, 11 January 2022.
Northern Flicker.

An eventful morning, but not for the wildlife. For the third time in the past year, I dropped my trusty old Garmin Edge on the trail with dog—but this time, retracing our steps, I didn’t find it. So I bought a new one.

Otherwise, the day was forecast to be similar to yesterday, so we started later, so I could compare bird activity in sunnier conditions. Turns out there were fewer—but it might’ve been due to the bad air. (Big ol’ inversion had a haze of particulates up to a couple thousand feet, looked like.)

The highlight of our hike: At just about the same hour as yesterday, at almost exactly the same place, a flicker flew by in the same direction—only this time, while also being my first bird photo, it was my only good ’un.

(Will look for the old Garmin again in the morning.)
