 Savannah Sparrow.
An overcast morning. Very likely more eggs have hatched since yesterday, and more birds have fledged. The Savannah Sparrows remain on alert, and the phoebe nestlings seem just about ready to fly.
It’s hard not to love this time of year.

 Chestnut-sided Warbler (female).
Bright early but quickly overcast. Temperatures in the 50s (F) with a light breeze. A spattering of morning sprinkles followed by a steady light rain in afternoon and evening.
 Savannah Sparrow.
Dog and I got to the hill pretty early. Found quite a few birds with obvious fledglings lurking in the periphery, some whining loudly for food. At the summit, I heard loud chips behind me and turned to see a female Chestnut-sided Warbler nearly close enough to touch. Listened to a singing Savannah Sparrow while nearby its mate perched with what looked like a mantis. Bluebirds about. Towhees. Alder flycatchers.
The usual suspects.

 Rose-breasted Grosbeak.
 Dove and swallow.
Beautiful early summer morning. I had twenty-one birds on my list by the time I turned up onto the main trail—including a singing Rose-breasted Grosbeak whose voice did tricks I’d never heard before.
 American Toad.
Nestling phoebes, nestling swallows, nestlings everywhere. Fledglings, too.
Even surprised an American Toad down toward the parking lot.
Ah, summer in Maine.
