Big news today was the Yellow-headed Blackbird that showed up on the island. Big news for all the birders who saw (and didn’t) see it—especially, perhaps, my own self, since it was a lifer for me. However, back at the Trailing Yew later, as I popped into my room to change from shorts to jeans, the bird showed up all sunlit and photogenic on the tip of a spruce overlooking the yard. Dang it.

With so much going on out here, it’s hard to make time for thrilling blog entries. So for the next few days, I’ll just try for a partial species list and post a few semi-decent photos. And maybe mention a few highlights—like the Clay-Colored Sparrow that wowed us by fluttering back and forth along the trail, munching on Queen Anne’s Lace.

Redhead

Monday, September 22nd, 2014
Red-headed Woodpecker, Mohegan Island, Maine, 22 September 2014.

Red-headed Woodpecker.

It had been nearly twenty-five years since I’d seen a Red-headed Woodpecker—back when I took a business trip to New Orleans and happened to see an adult male. So it was nice to spend a little while today watching one. Albeit a first-year male, without that famous red headdress. Good bird.

But Monhegan is full of good birds. Another in particular was a Prairie Warbler that combed through all the shrubbery around the Trailing Yew, popping up from time to time. I also got looks at my first hawks out here this trip. The birding was perhaps three times better than yesterday, and the monarchs are still fluttering around in droves.

I dipped on the Lesser Black-backed Gull everyone else has seen, and a chat that’s been reported.. But the redhead made up for all that.

Plus, there’s still plenty of time.
