Black-and-white Warbler, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 08 May 2019.
Black-and-white Warbler.

Chillier this morning, nearly cloudless—and breeze from an inconvenient direction. Nevertheless, a bunch of migrating songbirds were moving through the still-mostly-bare hardwoods this morning.

First-of-year birds: Great Crested Flycatcher, Chestnut-sided Warbler, Nashville Warbler, and Common Yellowthroat. (I called the yellowthroat!) I worry a little about the savannah Sparrows because of the serious mow up there—but I expect a few will be back before long.

Lots of Blue-headed Vireos still. And ravens are around. Still, plenty of species have yet to arrive. At home this afternoon, I heard the whistle of a Broad-winged Hawk, walked out, and got a good look at it as it took flight from a tree out back.

Exciting time of year.
